This is a live recording from October 5, 1976, in Detroit, featuring "The Tommy Bolin Band"—the solo project of the young guitar genius Tommy Bolin following his departure from Deep Purple. Ironically, he would meet his tragic end just two months after this tour. While his time in Deep Purple saw him constantly compared to Ritchie Blackmore and sinking into drug addiction, this recording showcases a different side of him; playing alongside like-minded musicians, he performs with genuine freedom and brilliance. Recordings of Tommy from the post-Purple era are rare and often undervalued, but this release features playing that reveals the "real" Tommy—a performance characteristic of his unique fusion of jazz and rock. You can enjoy a performance that suggests he would have achieved massive success had he pursued a career as a solo artist instead of joining Deep Purple. Although this is an audience recording, the sound quality rivals that of a soundboard recording, with no interference from the enthusiastic crowd.
