On June 7, 1993, when Prince announced that he was changing his name to an unpronounceable symbol, he also revealed that he would no longer release new albums, intending instead to focus his efforts on other forms of artistic expression, such as stage performances and film. Against this backdrop, in 1993, Prince produced *Glam Slam Ulysses*—a stage musical based on Homer’s epic poem, *The Odyssey*. "Ulysses" is the Latinized name for the protagonist, Odysseus. The production combined live performance with visual elements, featuring dancers performing to a soundtrack of 13 previously unreleased songs by Prince.

Promotional material from the time described it as "a Homeric, erotic odyssey in which Ulysses and his companions—'wanderers of the world'—journey through the universe of Glam Slam." It was billed as being "presented at Glam-o-Rama" and "featuring 13 new songs."

In this production, Carmen Electra played the dual roles of Penelope and Calypso. The show ran for a limited engagement from August 21 to September 4, 1993. The male lead was played by Frank Williams, and the choreography was handled by Jamie King. Prince himself did not appear on stage.

Each of the songs composed by Prince was intended to represent a specific element of *The Odyssey*. Notably, some of these tracks exist in versions exclusive to this production: "Come" appears in a unique, though not full-length, version; "Dolphin" is the original version; "Space" is an edited version of the original full-length track; "What's My Name" features a different instrumental mix; "Endorphinmachine" is the original full-length version; and "Race" is a live-band version created in 1993.

The performances took place at Glam Slam, a club in Los Angeles, with a capacity of approximately 400 people per show. Tickets were priced at $19.99 for the 7:30 PM performances, while the Sunday matinee shows cost $15.00. Initially, the plan was for this production to embark on a U.S. tour following its premiere at Glam Slam. However, it received poor reviews from critics, and the production and staging plans were scrapped after the conclusion of the first scheduled run of performances in Los Angeles.

This DVD contains two versions: an approximately one-hour, nearly complete "leaked" recording, and a 30-minute "short version" that was discovered later, featuring superior picture and sound quality.

The accompanying CD contains an audience recording of the performance—the exact source is unknown, but it captures nearly the entire show—which differs slightly from the footage. Also included is audio ripped from the version of the video that offers better sound quality.
