This release captures Deep Purple's performance at Osaka-jo Hall in Osaka, Japan, on June 26, 1991—their fifth tour of the country. Following Ian Gillan's departure, Joe Lynn Turner was recruited as vocalist upon Ritchie Blackmore's strong recommendation. Turner's tenure lasted approximately two and a half years, during which the band toured Japan and released one album; with Ian Gillan returning in 1992, this lineup represents the shortest-lived vocal era in Deep Purple's history. The sound leans slightly toward a pop style—reminiscent of the later Rainbow era—which might feel a bit jarring for long-time Deep Purple fans; however, Ritchie’s guitar work is superb, and the other band members are in fine form, making for a highly enjoyable overall performance. The audience is enthusiastic, and the setlist offers a well-balanced mix of the band's classic hits. Given the rarity of recordings from this specific period of the band's history, this release comes highly recommended. As for the audio, it is an audience recording derived from a high-quality source; while it bears the slight sonic characteristics of its era, it delivers a stable, high-quality listening experience with excellent presence, clarity, and immediacy.
