This release features a complete, full-length recording of a live festival performance by the CTI All-Stars, sourced directly from the soundboard. For jazz fans of the 1970s, CTI needs no introduction; for those less familiar, it was a record label that—during an era when jazz was branching out in many different directions—specialized in releasing jazz infused with the vibe of soul music. Its two primary headliners were trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and saxophonist Stanley Turrentine. The rhythm section that served as the backbone of the label consisted of Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette. This live performance brought together a stellar lineup of musicians who defined the CTI label. In addition to the aforementioned core duo, the roster includes artists like Grover Washington Jr. and Bob James—musicians who were active in the more fusion-oriented side of the spectrum. The setlist is equally enticing, packed with covers of works by Marvin Gaye, John Coltrane, Clifford Brown, Hank Crawford, Chick Corea, Sonny Rollins, and Billie Holiday. This is an excellent release, featuring a superb setlist performed by a group of virtuoso musicians, all captured in high-quality soundboard audio.
