The "Necromancer" series—which reissues rare titles from niche, handmade, collector-focused labels using official master recordings—now welcomes "Headless Hawk," one of the premier labels for jazz collectors. These rare titles are being reintroduced at an accessible price point, featuring new reissue branding and updated back-cover artwork.

This is a soundboard live recording of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, featuring the duo of Julian "Cannonball" Adderley—who anchored Miles Davis’s band in the late 1950s—and his brother, Nat Adderley. The set includes a spirited performance of "The Work Song," a classic of the soul-jazz genre composed by Nat Adderley (also well-known to rock fans through the version by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band). The pianist, Josef Zawinul, is the same Joe Zawinul who would later go on to form Weather Report with Wayne Shorter. Given the timeline, this performance took place just before Zawinul participated in the sessions for Miles Davis’s landmark album, *Bitches Brew*; it is fascinating to hear his piano work here, which would eventually help shape that historic masterpiece. Notably, Zawinul would later leave the group, with George Duke subsequently taking over on piano. The performances by this quintet—which can be credited with nurturing jazz-rock pianists—are a must-listen.
