This is a concert featuring Beatles covers by Brad Mehldau—and it is a far cry from the kind of "Beatles in Jazz" background music you might hear in a trendy soba noodle shop.
This release contains the complete two-day concert series held in September 2020, billed as "Beatles Weekend." The first day (the 19th) is presented via a high-quality, remastered audience recording, while the second day (the 20th) is sourced from a high-definition, professionally shot stream. Held in a prestigious concert hall, the atmosphere is akin to a classical recital; there is virtually no cheering or applause during the performances, and the applause between tracks has been carefully edited out. Even the first day’s recording offers a level of clarity comparable to a direct soundboard feed. True to the "Beatles Weekend" theme, both days are packed with Beatles songs—interspersed with a solo track by Paul McCartney, as well as songs by The Zombies, The Beach Boys, and even David Bowie. While Mehldau is a virtuoso who has performed entire concerts dedicated to Bach, he has never before focused so extensively on pop covers—and with the setlist dominated by The Beatles, this is a release that shouldn't be limited to just jazz fans; it is a must-hear for Beatles fans as well!
