When it comes to definitive releases of Japan tour performances, the "Sylph" label has become a reliable staple. It is a fantastic bootleg CD-R that delivers the full experience of the show—a treat for both those who attended the concert and those who couldn't make it. Naturally, the audio is derived from a high-quality DAT master; the sound is flawless and easy to listen to, yet it also brilliantly captures the atmosphere and "air" of the live performance.
A distinctive feature is the sound of the upright bass; rather than just a low-end rumble, it comes through with a sharp, punchy, and articulate tone. The audio stability is so impressive that you might even forget it is an audience recording.
As expected from a trio lineup, the performance allows for improvisation—a major difference from an orchestral setting. The impression that it feels "rougher" than the *'68 Come Back Special* is likely due to Slim Jim's standing drum kit.
