Part of the Newport Jazz Festival in Europe tour, this performance took place on October 26, 1971, at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, Belgium, marking the sixth show for this new septet lineup.

Featuring 19-year-old drummer Ndugu Chancler, the rhythm section—a powerful trio of drums and percussion—delivered a heavy, funky beat that functioned to perfection. The performance reached a fever pitch, offering a magnificent live experience that foreshadowed the sound of the mid-70s albums *Agharta* and *Pangaea*; it has long been a favorite among fans.

While the full scope of the performance was previously available via a soundboard recording made by the Belgian national broadcaster, a new master has now emerged in 2026, boasting overwhelming sound quality that far surpasses earlier releases.

This release takes that new master and polishes the audio to the absolute limit using the label's proprietary demix and remastering processes. The two horns—Miles and Gary—which might otherwise have tended to get buried in the mix, are pushed to the forefront with commanding presence, ranging from solid mid-range tones to soaring high notes. You can enjoy astonishingly high-quality sound that reproduces every aspect of the septet's performance with perfect resolution and imaging—from the rhythm section (featuring a three-man percussion team and Michael Henderson’s bass) to Keith’s keyboard work, which lays down a rich, dynamic sonic tapestry.

We have also meticulously removed the DJ voice-over and scattered noise issues found at the beginning of "Yesternow"—the biggest flaws in the new master—ensuring a completely seamless and stress-free listening experience from start to finish.

The set flows non-stop from the opening "Directions" into "Honky Tonk." Please fully immerse yourself in this historic performance by the septet—fueled by inspiration and an unbroken groove—delivered with truly superb sound quality.
