The "Necromancer" series—which reissues rare titles from niche, collector-focused, handmade labels using official master recordings—now features "Headless Hawk," one of the premier labels for jazz collectors. These rare titles are being re-released at an accessible price point, complete with a new reissue emblem and updated back-cover artwork.
This is a live recording by a group led by Mike Clark. It is a high-quality soundboard recording with excellent instrument separation and a well-balanced stereo mix. While Mike Clark is, of course, the drummer for The Headhunters, the other members are so formidable that he might actually be the least well-known musician in the lineup. The group features the funky bass work of Paul Jackson and the seasoned, masterful guitar playing of soul-jazz veteran Melvin Sparks. Fred Wesley—famous for his work with James Brown—also brings his own distinct, commanding presence. The set kicks off with tracks reminiscent of the J.B.'s, and naturally includes Headhunters staples like "Watermelon Man" and "Chameleon." They even perform "Footprints," the classic composition by Wayne Shorter (widely known through his work with Miles Davis). Although there is no keyboard player, this blend of The Headhunters and the J.B.'s—a pure, high-octane funk experience—is an absolute must-listen.
