The "Necromancer" series—which reissues rare titles from "by-collectors, for-collectors" handmade labels using official master recordings—now welcomes "Headless Hawk," one of the premier collector labels in the jazz world. These rare titles are being re-released at an accessible price point, featuring new reissue emblems and updated back-cover artwork.
This live recording showcases saxophonist John Zorn, an artist whose diverse career spans everything from orthodox jazz and the avant-garde to punk and new wave. As the presence of guitarist Marc Ribot suggests, this performance leans heavily into the avant-garde and free jazz. And then—Lou Reed joins the fray! With the use of howling feedback and explosive noise, it’s as if *Metal Machine Music* has returned. The performance evolves into a fusion of John Zorn’s avant-garde trio and the sonic intensity of *Metal Machine Music*. Neither strictly jazz nor rock, this release—as the setlist implies—is less a conventional "musical" performance and more a "sonic work" created through the spontaneous interplay of instruments. While the audience recording is of good quality, please note that because the music is rooted in noise and free improvisation, it may not be for everyone.
