The "Necromancer" series—which reissues rare titles from handmade, collector-focused labels (originally circulated only within very limited circles) using official master recordings—now features "Headless Hawk," one of the premier labels for jazz-related collector recordings. These rare titles are being re-released at an accessible price point, complete with new reissue emblems and updated back-cover artwork.
This is a live recording of a powerful quartet led by John McLaughlin. Among the jazz-rock-oriented lineup, Jack Bruce—yes, the very same Jack Bruce from the band Cream—stands out. Beyond his work with Cream, Bruce collaborated with McLaughlin in Tony Williams’ Lifetime and frequently participated in sessions with jazz-oriented musicians like Larry Coryell. His distinctive bass sound carries an immense, commanding presence. Although this is an audience recording, the bass lines are captured with impressive clarity. It offers a fascinating glimpse into what it might have sounded like had Jack Bruce joined the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
