The "Necromancer" series—which reissues rare titles from "by collectors, for collectors" handmade labels (previously available only in very limited circulation) using official master recordings—now welcomes "Headless Hawk," a premier jazz collector's label. These rare titles are being re-released at an accessible price point, featuring new reissue branding and updated back-cover artwork.
Presenting a heavyweight collection from the pioneer of soul jazz, Horace Silver. This live collection compiles soundboard recordings and pro-shot footage from 1965 to 1969 across three CDs and a DVD. It features a series of superb performances, anchored by the iconic jazz masterpiece "Song for My Father." I referred to this group as the "progenitors of soul-jazz" at the outset, and a glance at the lineup makes it clear why: it includes Randy Brecker—who would go on to become the premier trumpeter in the soul-jazz scene of the 1970s—Bennie Maupin (of The Headhunters), and Billy Cobham—a key architect of the funky sound, known for his work with the Mahavishnu Orchestra and his collaborations with George Duke. The ensemble is further bolstered by the presence of star saxophonist Joe Henderson. Listen closely to each performance, and you will begin to see the "soul" beneath the jazz facade. Billy Cobham’s intense drumming is a particular highlight; his sharp, decisive cymbal work is absolutely steeped in the spirit of soul. Please note that there are some instances of audio noise on the DVD.
