This collector's CD set presents a complete recording of the January 1, 1970 "Early" and "Late" shows from Jimi Hendrix's New Year's concerts at the Fillmore East in New York City (held from December 31, 1969, to January 1, 1970). It utilizes soundboard (SB) sources, supplemented by audience recordings to fill in any gaps. While the original release—featuring an all-Black lineup—suffered from a disjointed tracklist due to contractual issues, and subsequent releases were merely "digest" edits of the '69 and '70 shows, this item offers the complete live performances for each day. Even the official releases, which focused primarily on the 1970 shows, only included a total of nine songs across both the Early and Late sets; it is speculated that complete recordings of the Fillmore East shows from 1969 and 1970 may not have been fully preserved. It is a great shame that the official DVD release was in black-and-white and lacked substantial content. For each show, any gaps in the soundboard (SBD) source have been filled using an astonishingly high-quality audience recording; this allows for a complete concert experience that captures moments like the cuts between songs, creating a highly realistic listening experience. While the audio quality is a matrix mix of SBD and audience sources, the audience segments are of such high quality that they could easily be mistaken for the soundboard feed.
