This Collectors CD captures the first night of Yuya Uchida’s second visit to Japan as a special guest at the 1975 World Rock Festival, produced by the legendary figure of the Japanese rock scene, Yuya Uchida. The concert took place on August 3 at the Makomanai Indoor Stadium in Sapporo. The World Rock Festival featured a lineup of artists that would be unthinkable today. Performers included Japan’s Creation and Yonin Bayashi, as well as Felix Pappalardi—famous for producing Cream—from the U.S., and Joe Yamanaka, who was active in the U.S. at the time. The live event lasted for over half a day. Joe & Felix Pappalardi’s set ended just after 7:00 p.m. in the second half of the concert, but—believe it or not—Jeff Beck had only just arrived at Chitose Airport. His live performance, with no rehearsal whatsoever, began just after 9:00 p.m.—a truly memorable concert. Jeff Beck’s second Japan tour of 1975—which began with Yuya Uchida’s announcement, “There were all sorts of things that happened, but here’s JEFF BECK!!”—saw two of the five scheduled shows canceled due to Jeff Beck’s poor health, resulting in only three performances in Sapporo, Nagoya, and Tokyo. Furthermore, while recordings from the 1975 Japan tour—primarily from Tokyo and Nagoya—have been widely available on the market, recordings of this Sapporo performance are extremely rare and almost never seen. This recording was carefully remastered from the original analog source, with noise removed and digitized. It retains a strong sense of presence; Jeff Beck’s guitar parts have been boosted, making them very easy to hear, and the overall mix is well-balanced and immersive, bringing the Sapporo show from Jeff Beck’s second 1975 Japan tour vividly back to life. True to the nature of a live performance with no rehearsal, there are moments where the band members’ timing is off, adding an interesting and enjoyable element to the experience.
