DON CHERRY WORKSHOP ORCHESTRA / AFRICAN RHYTHMS (3CDR)

DISC 1 // First Set (4 Tracks)
DISC 2 // First Set (3 Tracks), Second Set (2 Tracks)
DISC 3 // Third Set (5 Tracks)

The "Necromancer" series—which reissues rare titles from niche, collector-run, handmade labels using official master recordings—now welcomes "Headless Hawk," one of the premier labels for jazz collectors. These rare titles are being re-released at an accessible price point, featuring new reissue branding and updated back-cover artwork.

This is an experimental jazz recording led by trumpeter Don Cherry—a musician whose adventurous, experimental approach earned him greater acclaim in Europe than in the United States. This three-disc set captures performances themed around Africa, spanning the first through the third sets. While the music is primarily improvisational, it is anchored by recurring African rhythms, keeping the improvisation grounded and highly accessible rather than veering into pure "free jazz." It is highly recommended for fans of spiritual jazz, Afro-rhythms, and African music—and, of course, it goes without saying that it is a must for Don Cherry fans. Although credited as an audience recording, the sound quality is so high that it could easily pass for a soundboard recording, especially considering the era in which it was captured.
