INFORMATION FOR OVERSEAS' COLLECTORS
This master recording of AC/DC’s concert at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester on 6 May 1978 is unique and captures the band during a particularly fascinating period in its history.
The Manchester concert took place just six days after the recording of the band’s official live album, If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It), at the Apollo Theater in Glasgow.
At the time, AC/DC was breaking out of Australia and the UK and reaching a much larger international audience. With Bon Scott on vocals, Angus Young on lead guitar and Malcolm Young on rhythm guitar, the band was a raw, high-energy live act, renowned for its loud, uncompromising performances.
The concert took place during the UK tour supporting Powerage. The album was released on 5 May 1978, just one day before this performance, making the date particularly significant for collectors and fans alike.
One notable detail is that AC/DC performed Dog Eat Dog at some other shows on the Powerage tour. However, the song is absent from the Manchester setlist, which instead features a unique performance of Down Payment Blues.
The main reason this show stands out is its timing: the concert took place on 6 May, immediately after the release of Powerage on 5 May. The audience was therefore hearing the band at a moment when its new material was just reaching the public.
The Free Trade Hall was also a renowned concert venue in Manchester, where major rock acts such as David Bowie, KISS and AC/DC performed during the 1970s. This show forms part of the series of British club and concert hall performances that helped establish the band’s reputation.
For anyone interested in AC/DC in 1978, this is a historically significant show worth hearing. The combination of Riff Raff, Down Payment Blues, Whole Lotta Rosie and Let There Be Rock offers a compelling snapshot of the band during the Powerage era.
