On June 7, 1993, when Prince announced that he was changing his name to an unpronounceable symbol, he also revealed a new direction: he would no longer release albums, focusing instead on new forms of artistic expression such as stage productions and films.

It was against this backdrop that Prince created *Glam Slam Ulysses* in 1993—a stage musical based on Homer's epic *The Odyssey*. "Ulysses" is the Latin name for the protagonist, Odysseus. The production combined live performance with video projections, featuring dancers performing to a soundtrack of thirteen previously unreleased songs by Prince.

Promotional materials from the time described it as "A Homeric erotic odyssey in which Ulysses and his companions—'Wanderers of the World'—journey through the universe of Glam Slam," "Performed at Glam-o-Rama," and "Featuring 13 new songs."

In this production, Carmen Electra played the dual roles of Penelope and Calypso. The show ran for a limited engagement from August 21 to September 4, 1993. Frank Williams played the male lead, and Jamie King handled the choreography; Prince himself did not appear on stage.

Each of Prince's songs was intended to represent a specific element of *The Odyssey*. Notably, the show featured versions of songs that could not be heard anywhere else. "Come" appeared in a unique version (though not the full-length track), while "Dolphin" was the original version. "Space" was an edited version of the original full-length track. "What's My Name" featured a mix with a different instrumental arrangement. "Endorphinmachine" was the original full-length version, and "Race" was a live-band version created in 1993.

Performances took place at Glam Slam, a club in Los Angeles, with a capacity of approximately 400 people per show. Ticket prices were $19.99 for the 7:30 PM performances and $15.00 for the Sunday matinees.

Initially, there were plans to take the show on a nationwide tour following its premiere at Glam Slam. However, critical reception was poor, and plans for further production and performances were scrapped after the conclusion of the scheduled run in Los Angeles.

The included DVD-R contains approximately one hour of leaked footage that is nearly complete. We have also included two versions of a roughly 30-minute short edit that was unearthed later, featuring superior picture and sound quality.

The included CD-R contains an audience recording of the performance—sourced from an unknown location—that captures the show almost in its entirety; consequently, the audio differs slightly from the video. We have also included audio ripped from the video footage, which offers somewhat better sound quality.
