This is a soundboard live recording of The Eleventh House from 1975, during Larry Coryell’s creative peak. Although it is a live performance, it took place in a studio setting with a very small audience; this makes for a clean, easy-to-listen-to recording, though it lacks the palpable atmosphere of a typical concert. The session was held at Electric Lady Studios, the facility founded by Jimi Hendrix. While Coryell may be less well-known among rock fans compared to jazz-rock guitarists like John McLaughlin or Allan Holdsworth, The Eleventh House was a formidable group—fully capable of going toe-to-toe with the fusion giants of the era, such as the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, and Weather Report. Of particular note is the high-speed drumming of Alphonse Mouzon; his relentless, rapid-fire snare work is truly masterful, driving Coryell—who was at the height of his powers—to even greater heights. The performances here lean more heavily into rock and pack a more intense punch than those of the aforementioned fusion bands. If you’ve tended to avoid "fusion" because the term suggests something soft or lightweight, this is a recording you should definitely check out. You’re guaranteed to be blown away by this red-hot jazz-rock.
