This release marks the debut of a live recording from 1982 (Oregon) featuring "X"—the treasures of the LA punk scene who remain active to this day—captured in superb soundboard quality. Any gaps or chapter breaks resulting from tape swaps have been carefully smoothed out.
The setlist spans material ranging from their debut album *Los Angeles* (selected for *Rolling Stone*'s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time) to their third album *Under the Big Black Sun* (their debut for Elektra).
The appeal of X's sound lies in the dual vocals of frontman John Doe and Exene Cervenka (the band's sole female member) and a stripped-down rock sound rooted in indigenous country and rockabilly styles—though they would lean further toward roots music in their later period. Also a must-listen is their punk cover of "Soul Kitchen" by The Doors—the band that included their producer, Ray Manzarek—which is featured on their debut album. X is also famous for being the band that prompted the group originally known simply as "X" to add "JAPAN" to their name (becoming X JAPAN). They are a legendary rock band that has made immense contributions to the expansion of musical styles in recent times.
