Recorded 11th November - 19th December 1982,
Boulogne Billancourt (near Paris) France, Pathé-Marconi Studios
We are releasing the 1982 *Undercover* sessions recorded at Pathé Marconi in France, sourced from high-quality stereo soundboard recordings. This generous release spans two discs—Disc 1 running 79:04 and Disc 2 running 72:02—featuring a total of 29 tracks. The material is derived from four master tapes: Art Collins Tapes Nos. 4, 15, 16, and 18.
Disc 1 opens with "Wanna Hold You," featuring Keith's explosive introductory guitar strumming. "Pretty Beat Up" presents the backing track used for the final released version; unlike the version found on *Think You Like It* (DAC-109), this one lacks the guitar and harmonica overdubs. "Feel On Baby" is the shorter of the two takes unearthed for this release. The "Unknown Instrumental" is the same take as "The Dog" from the previously released *Vol. 1* (DAC-200). "Keep It Cool" is the same "Take 1" found on DAC-200. While "Can't Find Love," "Heart Beat," and "Eliza" were previously unearthed on *Too Much Blood* (DAC-182), this release offers a more pleasant listening experience with slightly less tape hiss. Takes 2 and 3 of "Heart Beat" were previously available only on OBR label CDs; here, for the first time, Takes 1 through 3 are presented in their original tape sequence, preserving the gaps between tracks. The remaining tracks on Disc 1—such as "Cooking Up," "Something I Want," "Chris' Song," "Part Of The Night," "Pink Pick," and "Pull Over"—were also previously exclusive to OBR CDs, but are presented here with more natural sound quality derived directly from the master tapes. While the seven tracks on DISC-2—"The Golden Mile," "In Your Hand," "Run And Take," "Dance Mr. K," "Christine," "Identification," and "Flirty"—were previously released on CD from leaked sources on *ALL ABOUT YOU* (DAC-187), the versions here offer superior sound quality. Please note that the instrumental jam "The Dog" appears again after "The Golden Mile," as this reflects the actual content of the original master tape. "Hideaway" is an upgraded version of the track that appeared at the end of *CHAIN SAW MASSACRE* (DAC-110). The two takes of "Show Me A Woman"—an early version of "Tie You Up (The Pain of Love)"—were previously available only on the OBR label; the first take is identical to the one included on DAC-200 under the alternate title "Slinky." "Munich Hilton" is a familiar track from *LONELY AT THE TOP* (DAC-096), but the version included here is a rare, previously unreleased take. "Melobar," featuring Ronnie's slide guitar work, was also previously released only on OBR's *BIRD'S VAULT VOL.3*.
Although many tracks in this release overlap with material from OBR, this edition offers a unique listening experience, featuring original content that has been independently remastered from the master tapes and restored to distinguish it from previous releases. Listening to *VOL.1* and this *VOL.2* together allows you to more directly appreciate the recording method—a departure from the *TATTOO YOU* era (Mick's concept) of relying on a stockpile of older songs; instead, the band recorded newly written material with all five members present in the studio. As heard on "Show Me A Woman" (with the guitar panned to the center), it appears Mick is playing guitar on various tracks as well. Overall, a more relaxed studio atmosphere is evident on *VOL.2* compared to *VOL.1*. Even dedicated fans who already own a variety of "cover version" tracks will likely make numerous discoveries here that bring a knowing smile to their faces as they listen. This release is highly recommended for anyone who enjoyed "Vol. 1." We encourage you to collect both "Vol. 1" and "Vol. 2" and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Pathé Marconi Studios in France, circa 1982.
