〇Elisa Fiorillo - Purple A compilation of Prince tribute performances. It features a wealth of rare footage, including clips captured on smartphones.
It begins with "Goodnight Sweet Prince," a collection of all of Prince’s appearances on *Saturday Night Live*. While the synchronization can occasionally be a bit off, the content includes English subtitles. During the performance of "Beautiful, Loved and Blessed," there is an announcement that *3121* would be released on March 21st. It only just dawned on me that it was March 21st.
...The *BBC TV 2016* special featured footage related to Prince from various British music programs, including *Top of the Pops*. A performance of "Sign 'O' the Times" by Muse—that’s something you’d only see in the UK.
At the *Billboard Music Awards*, there were moving moments from The Weeknd and Questlove, followed by Madonna’s rendition of "Nothing Compares 2 U," and then Stevie Wonder joining in for "Purple Rain." Each one was deeply, emotionally resonant.
Alicia Keys delivered a stunning version of "How Come You Don't Call Me." The fact that some of the footage comes from audience-recorded clips actually makes it all the more precious—it really brings home how a diverse array of brilliant artists came together to honor Prince with such exceptional covers. Bruce Springsteen was absolutely fantastic, too; yet, the way he left the guitar solo to his band members serves as a poignant reminder that when Prince performed "Purple Rain," he brought his entire, multifaceted talent to bear—it’s a song that simply cannot be replicated by anyone else. Meanwhile, D'Angelo’s take on "Sometimes It Snows in April" feels not just like a tribute, but like the work of a true musical successor—simple, yet radiating a profound love for Prince. And yet, when it comes to "The Beautiful Ones," there is simply no one on earth who could surpass the sheer, overwhelming power of Prince’s original vocals. Elton John didn’t perform a cover; instead, he shared memories of Prince before performing "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues"—a song containing the line, "I love you more than my own life." Duran Duran also dedicated their own song, "Save a Prayer," to Prince, though the reason remains unclear. As for "Nothing Compares 2 U," the version by fDeluxe—featuring Eric Leeds on saxophone and strings by STRINGenius—stands out as the best performance. Also featured is "If I Love U 2Nite"—a track created for the 1979 project "The Rebels" and sung by Gayle Chapman—which boasts a fantastic, Eagles-esque "Hotel California" vibe. Mavis Staples reflects on Prince, calling him her son and an angel, and describing him as possessing the most beautiful soul. Mint Condition delivers a sincere, funky cover, complete with dance moves. Noel Gallagher—known for his sharp tongue—offers a rare moment of praise; with Prince’s image projected on the stage screen, he remarks, "Like the title of an album by the band I used to be in, Prince was one of the giants upon whose shoulders we stood." He then performs "Live Forever" (with its lyrics about living forever) and "Wonderwall" (which contains the line about being a "wall" that shows you miracles). Next, the legendary rocker Paul McCartney delivers a high-energy, rock-infused rendition of "Let's Go Crazy"—a performance that captures the spirit of Prince perhaps better than any other—following a spirited take on the suggestive "Hi, Hi, Hi." The collection also includes footage from the Minnesota House of Representatives, where a woman performs "Purple Rain" accompanied by a keyboard. Sandra St. Victor—who is also credited as a songwriter—sings "Soul Sanctuary" a cappella, using it as an intro to a powerful, masterfully sung version of "The Beautiful Ones." Santana contributes a soulful, melancholic guitar performance of the deep cut "Last December," a song that speaks to the idea of becoming one. Other highlights include a jazzy take on "1999" by Herbie Hancock and his ensemble, a pro-shot clip of the "Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin singing "Purple Rain," and a deeply moving acoustic performance of "Sometimes It Snows In April" by Chris Martin and Lianne La Havas—the latter of whom was a great favorite of Prince’s. The final item is an interview with John Blackwell from April 26, 2016.
