This release captures the live performance by Band of Gypsys—a group that made a sensational debut in New York on December 31, 1969—at Temple Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 16, 1970, during their U.S. tour. Although management was reportedly unenthusiastic about an all-Black lineup, Jimi Hendrix himself stated that Band of Gypsys allowed him to play the music he truly wanted to create; the performances here reflect that sentiment, showcasing the band playing with wonderful freedom and confidence. While "Red House" is a staple of the Band of Gypsys repertoire, the rendition of "Machine Gun" included here is truly overwhelming, featuring explosive, relentless guitar work. The setlist blends old and new hits, making for a highly enjoyable concert experience. Regarding sound quality: although it is an audience recording, the audio is excellent considering the era. The instruments are balanced well, and the sound has a pleasant clarity that makes for an easy listening experience. While there are some minor issues—such as a cutout and a brief dropout in the master tape—the overall quality of the concert recording is outstanding.
