The "Necromancer" series—which reissues rare titles from niche, collector-focused, handmade labels using official master recordings—now features "Headless Hawk," one of the premier labels for jazz collectors. These rare titles are being re-released at an accessible price point, complete with a new reissue emblem and a redesigned back cover.
This is an undeniable, must-hear live recording of The Headhunters. It’s from 1975—how could it be anything but great? The lineup consists of nearly the entire original Headhunters crew, with Mike Clark on drums (from the second iteration of the band) and Blackbyrd McNight—who would go on to gain fame with Funkadelic—on guitar. While this was part of the tour for the album *Man-Child*, the classic staples still reign supreme. On "Hang Up Your Hang Ups"—a track also featured on the official *V.S.O.P.* album—Blackbyrd delivers the rhythmic guitar riffs (played by Ray Parker Jr. and Wah Wah Watson on the studio version) with effortless cool. And, as always, Herbie’s band introductions are just incredibly stylish.
