The "Necromancer" series—which reissues rare titles from small-scale, collector-run labels using official master recordings—now features "Headless Hawk," one of the premier labels for jazz collectors. These rare titles are being re-released at an accessible price point, complete with a new reissue emblem and updated back-cover artwork.
This is a 1978 live recording by the Elton Dean Quartet, captured via a high-quality soundboard source. Elton Dean is, of course, well known as the saxophonist for Soft Machine, while the piano is played by Keith Tippett—a musician whose musical lineage also intersects with that of Robert Fripp of King Crimson. Although this quartet might suggest a fusion of Soft Machine and King Crimson, the music itself leans closer to free jazz than to jazz-rock or progressive rock.
