The "Necromancer" series—which reissues rare titles from "by collectors, for collectors" handmade labels (previously available only in very limited circles) using official master recordings—now welcomes "Headless Hawk," one of the premier collector labels in the jazz world. These rare titles are being re-released at an accessible price point, featuring new reissue emblems and updated back-cover artwork.
This is a substantial collection of rare Don Cherry sessions. Originally released in 2008 on the Headless Hawk label, this material was left out of the initial Necromancer reissue run—largely because the sheer volume of the content made the task of organizing the data quite daunting. However, following the positive reception of other Don Cherry releases within the Necromancer series, the decision was finally made to take on the project. The collection presents sessions recorded between 1963 and 1971 in chronological order, with the participating musicians for each session clearly documented. Given Don Cherry’s immense popularity in Europe, it is no surprise that most of these sessions took place in Sweden and Norway, featuring a lineup composed almost entirely of European musicians. This is an essential collection for fans of spiritual jazz or the ECM sound. The roster includes such intriguing figures as spiritual jazz luminary Pharoah Sanders, as well as Terry Riley—a key representative of minimalist music, standing alongside the likes of Steve Reich and Philip Glass.
