He discovered the charismatic guitarist Bernie Torme, and this collector’s CD features SBD recordings from a UK tour during the period when sales of his 1980 album *Glory Road* and 1981 album *Future Shock* were strong. This was a period when Ian Gillan had finally established his own musical style and was able to maintain a stable career; the recordings evoke memories of his high-energy, shout-filled vocals from his 1972 Deep Purple days. The other band members also provide solid backing for Ian Gillan, and guitarist Bernie Torme, in particular, delivers an energetic performance. On the Deep Purple classic “Smoke on the Water,” the interplay between Ian Gillan’s vocals and Bernie Torme’s guitar brings the crowd’s excitement to a fever pitch. The sound quality is clear thanks to the SBD recording. Unfortunately, there is a single audio dropout in “Smoke on the Water” on CD01, but otherwise, the recording is clear and consistent throughout.
